THE Order Block

Smart money concepts explained simply

What smart money concepts actually mean: liquidity, market structure, CHoCH, BOS, order blocks and fair value gaps, explained in plain English for beginners.

Smart money concepts, or SMC, is a way of reading price that grew out of ideas popularised by the trader known as ICT. Strip away the jargon and it comes down to a few sensible ideas about how large orders move the market.

1. Liquidity

Stop losses collect at obvious highs and lows. Big players need those orders to fill their positions, so price is often drawn to them. Read: liquidity and liquidity sweep.

2. Market structure

Higher highs and higher lows mean an uptrend; lower highs and lower lows, a downtrend. A break of structure confirms the trend continues. A change of character is the first sign it may be turning.

3. Footprints of big orders

An order block is the last opposite candle before a strong move. A fair value gap is a gap left by a very fast move. Traders watch both for price to return.

The catch

SMC has a lot of vocabulary, and it is easy to use it to explain any chart after the event. Every chart has order blocks and gaps in hindsight. What matters is whether a set of rules works before the move, tested over many trades.

A rules based version

The Asia sweep strategy uses just three SMC ideas in a fixed order: liquidity (the Asia range), a sweep of it, and a change of character, then a pullback entry with a fixed stop. Every result, losses included, is published on the results page.

Questions people ask

Is ICT the same as smart money concepts?

SMC is largely built on ideas popularised by ICT (Inner Circle Trader). People use the names almost interchangeably, though ICT’s own teaching includes many more specific models.

Does smart money trading work?

The ideas behind it, like liquidity and market structure, are sound. Whether a particular SMC strategy works depends on its rules and should be judged on many tested trades, not a few screenshots.
