CHoCH vs BOS: what is the difference?
A break of structure (BOS) confirms a trend; a change of character (CHoCH) is the first sign it is turning. How to tell them apart, with simple examples.
Both terms describe price breaking a swing high or low. The difference is the direction compared with the trend.
Break of structure (BOS)
In an uptrend, each time price breaks above the last swing high, that is a BOS: the trend is continuing. In a downtrend, each new break below a swing low is a BOS.
Change of character (CHoCH)
In an uptrend, the first time price breaks below the last higher low, that is a CHoCH. The trend’s character has changed: sellers have stepped in. In a downtrend it is the first break above the last lower high.
Why the CHoCH matters more for reversals
After a liquidity sweep, the CHoCH is the proof that the sweep worked and price has turned. Without it, the sweep might just be the start of a breakout. That is why our rule is simple: no CHoCH, no trade.
Watch both play out in the CHoCH lesson.
Questions people ask
Is a CHoCH a reversal signal?
It is the first sign of a possible reversal, not a guarantee. It is strongest when it follows a liquidity sweep and is made with a strong, decisive candle.
Should I enter on the CHoCH candle?
We don’t. Entering on the pullback after the CHoCH gives a better price and a smaller stop, and on real GBPUSD data it produced fewer, better trades.
