How to choose a prop firm in the UK
A plain checklist for UK traders before buying a prop firm challenge: the rules that matter, red flags, payouts, and how to check the firm is real.
Prop firms sell challenges: you pay a fee, trade under their rules, and if you pass you trade their money for a share of the profits. There are hundreds of firms, the rules differ a lot, and some have closed owing traders money. This checklist is about choosing carefully, not about any particular firm. We don’t recommend or take payment from any prop firm.
1. Read the rules that end accounts
- Daily loss limit: how much you can lose in one day, and whether it is measured from the day’s starting balance or equity, and at what time the day resets.
- Overall loss limit: static (a fixed floor) or trailing (follows your highest balance). Static is far more forgiving. See trailing drawdown explained.
- News rules: some firms ban trading around high impact news on funded accounts.
- Consistency rules: limits on how much of your profit can come from one day or one trade.
- Holding rules: whether you can hold trades overnight or over the weekend.
Use our prop firm drawdown calculator to see what the limits mean for your risk per trade.
2. Match the rules to your strategy
A strategy with fixed 10 pip stops and one or two trades a day suits most standard two step challenges. A strategy that holds trades for days needs a firm that allows overnight and weekend holding. Pick the firm that fits how you already trade, not the other way round.
3. Check how payouts really work
- The profit split (often 80%) and how soon the first payout is allowed.
- Minimum payout amounts and any buffer you must leave in the account.
- Whether the challenge fee is refunded with the first payout.
- How you are paid (bank transfer, crypto) and whether that works for you in the UK.
4. Red flags
- Rules that are vague, buried, or change after you have paid.
- Constant heavy discounts and countdown timers pushing you to buy now.
- Many recent complaints about refused payouts for unclear reasons.
- No clear company name, address or terms you can read before paying.
5. Understand what you are buying
Most prop firm accounts are simulated: your trades are not placed in the real market, and the firm pays you from its own income. Prop firms are generally not regulated by the FCA, so you don’t get the protections you would with an authorised broker. Treat the fee as money you could lose, and only pay what you can afford.
Before you buy
Prove your strategy first. Backtest it, trade it on demo, and keep a journal for at least 50 trades. If you can’t stay inside the daily limit on demo, you won’t on a challenge.
Questions people ask
Are prop firms legal in the UK?
Yes, UK residents can buy prop firm challenges. But most prop firms are not authorised by the FCA and most accounts are simulated, so you don’t get the protections of a regulated broker. Read the terms carefully.
Do most people pass prop firm challenges?
No. Most challenges are failed, and usually because a rule is broken (often the daily loss limit) rather than because the strategy can’t make money.
What is the best prop firm?
There is no single best one. The right firm is the one whose rules fit how you trade, with clear terms and a track record of paying out. We don’t recommend specific firms.
