How much money do you need to start forex trading?
What you really need to start forex trading in the UK: practice first for free, then how small accounts, micro lots and prop firm challenges change the numbers.
The honest answer: nothing to start learning, and only money you can afford to lose when you go live.
Stage 1: free
A demo account, a replay tool and a journal cost nothing. This is where the learning happens. Trade your strategy here for at least 50 trades before you risk anything.
Stage 2: a small live account
Many FCA authorised brokers let you open an account with a few hundred pounds and trade micro lots (0.01). On GBPUSD a micro lot is worth about 8p a pip. With a £500 account, 1% risk is £5, which is a 10 pip stop on about 0.06 lots.
A small account won’t make meaningful money, and it isn’t meant to. Its job is to prove you can follow your rules with real money and real emotions.
Stage 3: scale slowly
Only add money once your journal shows you are following the plan. Keep the same percentage risk as the account grows.
What about prop firms?
A prop firm challenge fee (often £50 to several hundred pounds) gives you access to a larger account if you pass. It is a fee, not a deposit, and most challenges are failed. Read how to choose a prop firm first.

Questions people ask
Can I start forex trading with £100?
Some brokers allow it, and micro lots make small accounts workable. But treat it as practice with real emotions, not a way to make money. Only use money you can afford to lose.
Do I need a lot of money to trade forex?
No. You need time to learn and practise, which is free. Account size mostly changes how much each trade is worth, not how good a trader you are.
